Dear All
We have been perusing and pondering over the (beautifully designed)
leaflet for the class of 2001and would like to offer the following
suggestions for consideration:
Page One
1. Could the line "Second of a series of five annual conferences" be in
italics, with "to be held on" deleted?
2. Could we consider re-drafting para 1 along the following lines?:
"Academic Leaders in Sub-Saharan African universities are invited to
participate in a unique conference specifically designed to help equip
them for the challenges of change that they face. Those likely to
benefit most will be recently appointed Vice-Chancellors/Presidents/
Rectors and those whose next appointment is likely to be at that level."
3. In para 5 (The programme develops...) please may we change
"topics like" to "topics such as", delete the "and" after "learning
environment" and add, after "intellectual property" "and issues related
to the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic". Might the last sentence of
that para read better with "The" at the start?
4. Para 6 (The intended outcome...) needs, we feel, to be clarified.
Do we mean that the intended outcome of the programme "is that each
participant should acquire the capacity to develop plans that will
inform and contribute to (or facilitate?) the strategic development of
his/her institution; and that a network of peers will emerge to sustain
the momentum generated in the leadership development programme."?
5. Para 7, line 7 I think requires a "the" before University of Abertay
Dundee.
Page 2:
1. In the paragraph about the University of Abertay Dundee, line 13,
the pedant in me is unsure what the "it" refers to. Assuming it's the
Castle, might we have a full stop after 1298 and a new sentence
reading something like "The Castle eventually passed into the hands of
Dundee City Council and now houses the Dundee Business School and
provides teaching and research accommodation for the university."
2. In the ACU para, we need please to delete the words "by hosting a
higher education management service;"
I do hope at least some of the above makes sense. I shall leave my
annotated copy with Sarah while I am away from the office from 11 -
19 January.
