Dear Hermie
So sorry to be a nuisance, but my years of experience of working with
African VCs leads me to fear that the words "The successful applicants
will have covered...." may be misinterpreted. Some may take it to
mean that they, or their universities, will have had to cover those costs
before they can be accepted on the programme. Not all, I think, will
be familiar with that particular usage of the English language.
Could I suggest an alternative? "Up to twenty applicants will be
invited to attend the one-week session in August 2001. The
successful applicants' travel to and from Scotland, accommodation
and meals in Dundee, and their programme fees will be paid for by (or,
instead of "will be paid for by" we could, here, say "will be covered by"
because it is in the future tense) the three sponsoring bodies."
I should feel heartily relieved if it is not too late to change the text at
this stage!
