> Pacific Islands Draft Regional ICT Policy > > <<ole0.bmp>> Asia Pacific / Oceania 01 April 2002 > > <<ole1.bmp>> A draft information and communication technology (ICT) policy and strategic plan for the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICT) region was the outcome of a needs and assessment workshop held on 27 - 31 August 2001 in Noumeá, New Caledonia. The workshop was jointly organised by the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) and Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), sponsored by the governments of Australia, France and New Zealand, and drew together representatives from Pacific Island countries. The draft policy sets out a framework of four guiding principles: (i) ICT will be used to inform and connect Pacific Island populations and ensure that they benefit from flexible and appropriate education and training; (ii) Appropriate ICT infrastructure to support development for Pacific Islands; (iii) Easy access to information through ICT will strengthen co-operation between stakeholders to ensure good governance, to develop the private sector and to improve service delivery; (iv) ICT policies and regulations will be appropriate to the people and cultures of the Pacific Islands.
